DOE Number Surges 21.8 Cents to $4.796

The DOE number surged 21.8 cents on the week to $4.796/gal, per EIA's weekly on-highway diesel survey for the week of July 13, reversing last week's 9.0-cent retreat. At the stated 6.5 mpg reference, the index puts fuel at 73.8 cents a mile. The week's move adds about $16.77 to the fuel cost of a 500-mile haul.

• Gulf Coast (PADD 3): $4.546/gal, up 8% on the week, the largest regional move in this release. The lowest-priced PADD on the map, now 30% above its 5-year median.
• Lower Atlantic (PADD 1C): $4.748/gal, up 6% on the week.
• Midwest (PADD 2): $4.659/gal, up 5% on the week, tracking the national move.
• West Coast (PADD 5): $5.550/gal, up 2% on the week. California at $6.126/gal, up 1%. The West-vs-Gulf spread stands at 100.4 cents/gal.
• New England (PADD 1A): $5.189/gal, down 1% on the week, the only region in this release to ease.
• vs-5yr-median: The DOE number is 26% above its 5-year median for this calendar week. Every PADD is elevated, from 23% above (Rocky Mountain, PADD 4) to 30% above (Gulf Coast, PADD 3).

EIA's daily ULSD spot series has New York Harbor at $3.306/gal and the Gulf Coast hub at $3.253/gal as of July 6. Those figures represent untaxed bulk wholesale, not pump prices. Retail prices reflect taxes and the full distribution layer on top of those hub levels.
